What The Deal With Your Meal Part III

Are You The Problem or The Solution?  My Meal Is The Problem  My last post talked about how the corn and the chicken from my meal impacted the environment. We learned that industrialized corn farms use lots of water. This causes groundwater to be drained from the middle of the U.S. There is also an excessive use of fertilizers that runoff into rivers and canals that then drain into lakes and oceans. These runoffs cause dead zones that are harmful to marine life and the aquatic ecosystems. In addition, corn impacts the soil conditions. Due to the fact the commercialized crops use the same soil over and over it causes lots of erosion and damages the nut rients within the soil. This contributes to long-term damage to soil structure, which may make it hard to grow food in the future.  As for the chicken in my meal we learned that c hicken, no matter where they are raised are usually in inhumane conditions in giant warehouses. Chickens tend to cause water poll...

Why Should You Care About Plastic Bags?     Plastic Bags and Their Impact         Every item we use in our day-to-day lives impacts the environment one way or another. One item that has been making headlines for many years is the plastic bag. The plastic bag was invited in the 1950's by Mobil Oil and ever since then it has been a staple in the shopping culture. These bags are made of oil that is processed into polyethylene. This makes plastic bags impossible to decompose, taking anywhere from 400-1,000 years. Due to the fact that they take so long to disintegrate plastic bags end up all over in all different sorts of ecosystems causing massive repercussions. Some of the effects are, animals eating plastics and dying in places like Delhi India where cows roam free, the cows wonder into dumps and eat the food covered plastics. In turn this back up their intestines killing them. Other effects include the releasing of micro-plastics into bodies o...
